Hurricane boasts a unique senior citizen club. The 2007 baseball team is loaded with seven members of the class of '07 that will be vital to the success this season. It is unofficial, but total games started or played among these players on a varsity team may crack the 300 game bar. All seven seniors started a year ago, with then freshman Tyler Ward also starting all season at shortshop. Most of them started as sophomores as well and some even got valuable minutes as freshman. The seven seniors include: Jaron Ewell (OF/P).Ewell will begin the season in the dugout. Ewell injured his collar bone and has rooted for the Tigers from the side in their first three games. He will take things over again in center field soon enough. “He is extremely fast and has an outstanding arm. I have not seen an arm as strong as his in a long, long time,”Coach Steve Pearson said. Count on Ewell to be a big producer this season for Hurricane. Bear Haslam (IF/OF/P). He has played in multiple position for the Tigers and will likely be found at third base and in the outfield in his final season. “He is our wild card, our emotional spark plug,”Pearson said . Scott Homer (IF/P). Much will be expected of Homer this season. “He is an incredibly gifted player. He hit very well,he fields very well has great speed and is good on the mound,”Pearson said. “There is not any phase of his game that he doesn’t do well.”When Homer is not pitching,he will likely be at third base. He is always a threat to steal a base or two and can easily turn singles into doubles with his speed. Tony Humphries (OF/P). Humphries, one of the hardest workers on the Tiger team, has drastically improved his game the past two years and even greater things are expected of the lanky right hander. “He is a very good hitter and plays with a great deal of intensity,”Pearson said. “He has worked very hard in the off season and we expect him to do very well for us this year.” Mike Long (1B/OF). Long’s skills in the leadership department make him invaluable to the Tigers from the first base corner. “Our team is better when he is there (at first)”Pearson said. “He is a great leader,he holds things together when they are rough and he helps smooth things out”. Long has already found a hot bat as well which could help Hurricane come playoff time. Shane Martin (C/3B/P). A calming influence behind the plate is how Pearson described Martin. He is a great leader and a guy that everybody can rally around. Martin has a strong arm and will not see many people successfully steal bases on him and has a frame that can take any hit that may be made at home plate. Martin has enough pop in his bat to go deep this year as well. Jacob Wendt (IF/P). Wendt has been a factor in the Tiger lineup for the three previous years. “You can put him in anywhere and he will make things happen,”Pearson said. Wendt may be the most solid player defensively. He has a great glove at second base. He is a consistent hitter and can take care of business on the mound as well. |
