Go back a moment to the following events and see if you remember where you were when they happened: Princess Diana’s death;a memorable family trip;astronauts landing on the moon;or the birth of a child. Well for the hundreds who were in attendance at last Saturday’s Hurricane-Morgan basketball game,it might rank in the “do you remember when”status. The final 81-60 score doesn’t seem overly memorable. It could appear that Hurricane just blew out Morgan and it was more of a yawner than a game of legendary proportions. Either assumption would be incorrect. Morgan, who came into the game with a glossy 17-3 mark, with all three losses coming in Region 10 play, were saddled with an uncharacteristic third place position, played the type of game that warranted 17 wins. They shut down Hurricane in the second quarter, limiting the Tigers to just 10 points and held an 11 point edge midway through three quarters. Hurricane’s Shane Vaifanua and Megan Clyde provided most of the Tiger offense, scoring 26 of Hurricane’s 32 first half points. The Trojans had done their homework, doubling and even triple teaming Brandi Barrett, who could rarely touch the ball and was scoreless in the first half. Barrett’s first points came at the 4:08 mark of the third quarter. Morgan drove 332 miles to steal a victory and for nearly three quarters of the game, they were well on their way to the win. Then the wheels fell off on the bus. More accurately, the Tigers finally got their motor in gear and took off. Hurricane then unleashed its lethal press, led by Vaifanua, who ended up with 11 steals in this game alone, bringing her season total to 82 on the season. Morgan coughed up the basketball 13 times in the quarter and watched their lead quickly dwindle as Hurricane reeled off 13 straight points, mostly by Barrett, who had 12 points in the final four minutes of the quarter. Senior Leah Wilson also had eight steals in the game as Hurricane captured the lead again at 49-47 after three quarters of play. The Tigers tightened the noose even more on Morgan in the fourth quarter. Vaifanua pumped in 13 of her career high 35 points in the final period. The junior, who drives harder to the basket than a test dummy crashing a Lexus into the wall, was simply a force in the game that was unequaled by all five Trojans on the floor. Hurricane saved their best for last, scoring 29 points in the final quarter of play. Barrett scored 11 of her 23 point in the period. Hurricane now advances to the 3-A State tournament at Dixie State College where they will face Emery. The Spartans swept Region 8 with a perfect 8-0 mark and currently sport a 19-3 mark. Emery crushed Grantsville 81-59 in their inter-region playoff game Saturday. Grantsville, was the fourth seed in Region 11 ended the season with a 9-12 mark.
