St. George, UT - Margaret Afton Toolson Gardner passed away June 18, 2009 in St. George, UT. She was born February 9, 1925 in384064 Burley, Idaho. She met Rulon B. Gardner at Utah State University and they were married in 1947. They had five children: Rulon J., James R., Stephen T., Robert J. and Janet P., and were married 59 years until Rulon’s passing in 2006. Most of Rulon’s working years were with the U.S. Forest Service so Margaret wrangled the family from forest to forest from Alaska to Michigan. There were lots of changes and challenges but Margaret’s family could always count on a loving, nurturing home. Next to her family, Margaret loved playing the piano and organ at church the most and did so most of her life. Margaret and Rulon spent 20 years in Bozeman, MT., before retiring to St. George in 1985. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bloomington Hills LDS 10th Ward, 1222 E. Brigham Rd., St. George, UT. A visitation will be held Monday, 6-8 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah and Tuesday from10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the chapel, prior to services. Interment will be in the Pine Valley Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary 435-673-4221.

Thelma LaRue Birkeland St. George, UT – Our dear Mom, Grandma, Great Grandmother, Great-Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt 382669and Friend, Thelma LaRue Birkeland, passed from this mortal exsistance, to her beloved family on June 15, 2009. Thelma was born in Coalville, Utah, on 17 January 1914, to Willard M. Timmons and Clara May Timmons. Her parents were later divorced and Clara married George W. Brown. Thelma was sealed to them in the St. George LDS Temple 26 September 1977. She married Harold A. Birkeland, 8 March 1935 and later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple 27 September 1977. To this union one son was born, Harold Lee Birkeland. Thelma was the second of 7 brothers and sisters. The first, Roy Timmons, deceased, lived in St. George area. Five of her siblings died at child birth. Her sole surviving sister, Bernice Saddler lived in Salt Lake City, UT. She was schooled in Coalville and later in Salt Lake. She attended Granite High School. After her marriage to Harold she helped with the house hold budget working at J.C. Penney’s in Salt Lake for 27 years. Thelma served in several capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Always in good spirits and with a big smile. She was liked by all who knew her. She and her husband traveled to many places in their senior years. A wonderful Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great-Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Friend. Clarecie Ella Bounds Abbott, age 91, passed away June 14, 2009, in Provo, Utah. She was born October 24, 1917 in Pocatello,383180 Idaho to Clarence Richard and Sophia Lehman Ivie. She was the youngest of two children. She met her husband when a new family moved into the area where she was living in Fruitvale, Idaho. Clarecie married Alvin D. Bounds on July 3, 1935 and had 6 children - 5 surviving. She was a devoted lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served many years in her Stake Primary and Relief Society callings. Clarecie was always doing for others and had a great influence with her many nieces and nephews and others that frequented their home. Missionaries in the field often thought they had found their second home because of the warm " home-like" feeling there and some later returned to visit after their mission callings. She was devoted to her many family members and serving long hours for those in need. Al and Clarecie later divorced and she and her mother moved from Oregon to St. George, Utah, where she met Stowell E. Abbott. They were married on April 9, 1975 in the St. George Temple. John Thomas Paul, Jr., age 82, passed away June 14, 2009 in St. George, UT. He was born in Miami, Arizona on June 28, 1927382677 to John T. Paul, Sr., and Mary Ellen Culver. John was raised in Inspiration and Miami, Arizona and had several summer jobs in the copper mines there. After graduating high school, John received a B.A. in education from Arizona State University, then served in the US Army for two years. After his honorable discharge he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and worked as a teacher. There he met and married his wife Ferrel Naegle on August 28, 1953. John also worked as a Principal, completed his Masters degree in education, and coached track and basketball at Rancho High School. He later served as associate superintendent for the Clark County School District for 10 years. John and Ferrel retired to St. George, Utah, where they enjoyed golfing at Bloomington County Club and traveling in their R.V. He is survived by his wife Ferrel; daughter Cheryl Johnson; grandchildren: Jennifer, Jeffrey, and Julianne; his brother Bill and sister Rita Fincher. Graveside services will be held Friday, June 19, 2009, at 10 a.m., in the Tonaquint Cemetery, St. George, Utah, under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary 435-673-4221. Helen Egan Schoonover PDF Print E-mail
Helen (Egan) Schoonover, 77, passed away peacefully in her LaVerkin home, Friday, June 12, 2009. She was born in Burley, ID, 383185the third child of Troy C. Egan and Ethel (Campbell) Egan. She married her sweetheart, Jack Schoonover, on August 4, 1950. Six years and three children later they moved to Southern California where they eventually settled down in Long Beach. While raising her family, Helen worked as a vault clerk for First State Bank, and a Senior Account Clerk for Lynwood Unified Schools. She was also a member of the board for Mid-Cities Credit Union, and was very active serving in the LDS Church. Jack and Helen retired to LaVerkin, Utah in 1992 where she continued to serve in the church as a Relief Society President, and the director of the Family History Center. She also served her community as a member of the Board of Adjustments for the City of LaVerkin. Helen is survived by her sister, Georgia Blanch of Burley, ID; her eternal companion, Jack; three children: Jim, Dawn, David; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Helen will be held at the LaVerkin LDS Stake Center, 481 N. Main Street, LaVerkin, Utah on Saturday, June, 20, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. A visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to services at the Stake Center. Interment will be at the LaVerkin City Cemetery
