Management Departments of the five county area have published the Family Emergency Preparedness Guide, a comprehensive 50-page booklet designed to help prepare for and deal with whatever disasters may affect our community. Washington County residents will be receiving the booklets by mail during the week of August 3-8. While the SWUPHD and sponsors including Intermountain Healthcare, Southwest Behavioral Health Center, Petersen Medical, and Applegate Home Care & Hospice paid for publishing costs; Washington County provided the funding for delivery through the efforts of Dean Cox, former Emergency Management Coordinator for the county. “This project has been the result of wonderful community partnerships”, says Paulette Valentine, SWUPHD Emergency Preparedness/Communicable Disease Director. “You can keep this booklet with your 72 hours kits or other emergency preparedness supplies so that it is readily available in time of need.” “Your family will best cope by preparing for disasters before they happen”, continues Valentine. The four steps to safety that are addressed in the booklet are: • Find out about potential disasters for your area • Create a Family Disaster Plan • Complete the checklist contained in the booklet • Practice and maintain your plan. The hazards covered in the Family Emergency Preparedness Guide include everything from earthquakes, wildfires, storms, and flooding to chemical spills, bioterrorism, radiation, and pandemic flu.
